Biography
Clay Cheshire is a commercial litigator and corporate lawyer who specializes in energy, utilities, telecommunications, and local government law. He is a member of the firm's Regulatory and Utilities, Governmental Liability and Business Transactions and Litigation practice groups. Clay represents municipal, county, and investor owned utilities, joint action agencies, electric cooperatives, industrial end-users, independent power producers, and natural gas companies in sophisticated transactional, regulatory, finance, tax, and litigation matters. Much of his time is spent representing clients in various matters at the Georgia Public Service Commission. Clay is well-versed in Georgia and federal regulations pertaining to electricity, natural gas, and telecommunications.
Clay is also a member of the firm's Governmental Affairs practice group. He tracks legislation in the Georgia General Assembly and the United States Congress, advises clients as to the impact of that legislation on their interests, and represents those interests to members of the General Assembly.
Clay also has vast litigation experience. Given that litigation experience, Clay is uniquely situated to advise clients on methods to reduce their vulnerability to lawsuits. He helps clients maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, drafts and negotiates contracts, guides new businesses in entity selection and formation, and advises clients in various transactional matters.
Finally, Clay has specialized experience in the representation of firearms manufacturers and distributors. Clay formerly represented one of the world's largest firearms manufacturers nationwide in product defect matters as well as lawsuits brought by some of the country's largest cities. He has excellent relationships with current and former members of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and stays up to date on the Federal Firearms Act, and other federal and state laws and regulations regarding firearms.
